Malaysian rubber exporters face new EU traceability requirements

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will require Malaysian rubber exporters to meet traceability and due diligence requirements when placing rubber on the EU market, according to Netherlands-headquartered advisory firm Holdwise.

Under the regulation, large and medium-sized companies must comply from 30 December 2026, while micro and small companies have until 30 June 2027. The company that first places rubber on the EU market must submit a due diligence statement containing information about the product’s origin, including the location of the plantation. Buyers further down the supply chain have fewer obligations.

A Malaysian rubber exporter with its own company in the Netherlands could take responsibility for filing the due diligence statement using data from its own plantations and selling directly to European buyers, Holdwise said.

Robert Jeffrey, Senior Advisor International Structuring at Holdwise, said the regulation requires data from the source, making plantation-level traceability important for rubber exporters seeking access to the EU market.
