Conti US plant to be up ahead of schedule

THE construction of Continental Tire of the America’s US$ 500 million-worth Sumter tyre plant is expected to be completed ahead of schedule.

The site, which will begin production in late 2013 or early 2014, can produce 8 million passenger and light truck tyres at full capacity by 2021. Conti has hired 50 workers for the factory, with the number to increase to 300 by the end of 2013.

“This year we focused on hiring key members of our management team and a variety of engineers,” said Sumter Plant Manager Craig Baartman, adding that Conti is completing its management team lineup by 2013.”

In 2012, 18 multicraft technician employees have been hired and trained at a Conti tyre plant in Illinois, Germany, Portugal, France or Mexico to prepare them for their Sumter positions.(RJA)
