US companies Trek Bicycle and Liberty Tire Recycling have launched a bicycle tyre recycling programme across all Trek owned stores in North America. This initiative aims to provide cyclists with a free and responsible way to recycle their used bicycle tyres, the companies say.
Cyclists can bring their worn-out bicycle tyres to a participating Trek store, where they will be collected and recycled at no cost to the consumer. This program addresses the growing concern of tyre waste in landfills and its impact on the environment.
More than 50 million Americans cycle at least once a year, and with cycling increasing in popularity Americans deserve a way to conveniently recycle their old bike tyres. This initiative provides a convenient solution for cyclists and aligns with Trek and Liberty’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By keeping tyres out of landfills, the program aims to reduce pollution and promote sustainable practices within the cycling community.
Liberty Tire Recycling handles the process, making sure every part of the tyres is repurposed. The recycled materials are used in a variety of ways, including in landscaping, sustainable asphalt, tracks, fields, and more.
Trek Bicycle manufactures bicycles and last year had introduced its Red Barn Refresh – said to be the cycling industry’s first-ever manufacturer-led bike trade-in and refurbishment program. The used bikes are refurbished and sold on the brand’s website, trekbikes.com.
