Shin-Etsu Chemical’s Silicone Division invests on carbon neutrality goals

Tokyo-headquartered Shin-Etsu Chemical’s Silicone Division will be ploughing an investment totalling JPY20 billion to curb greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Shin-Etsu  expounded that the Silicone Division’s main manufacturing plant, the Gunma Complex, will reduce the volume of GHG by 14% against the current volume. It said that it will achieve this by further increasing the degree of self-sufficiency in its usage of electric power. The investment amount is for a total of JPY10 billion.

Moreover, it relayed its aim to strengthen the supply capacity of products that contribute to the environment. These include modified silicone fluids, silicone rubber for moulding, and heat-dissipation thermal interface silicone materials. The company will be investing at JPY 10 billion, and it will be implemented at the Gunma Complex.

Shin-Etsu Chemical’s Carbon Neutral policy is a key issue of management. The Silicone Division has developed and is marketing a millable-type of moulding silicone rubber that does not require post-cure in its manufacturing process. Accordingly, by using this product, it became possible to reduce the processing time by about 90%, compared to that needed for the conventional product, and it makes possible energy saving and the improvement of productivity for customers.

Additionally,it said that applications of the low-density type of silicone rubber that realise lighter-weight rubber moulded products are growing in many industrial fields such as automobiles and transportation vehicles like airplanes, as well as in other diverse fields such as wearable devices, and this contributes to energy saving by making them lighter-weight. In addition to these two innovative products it is now marketing, Shin-Etsu is developing and supplying many silicone products that contribute to the global environment by helping to achieve reductions in the volume of GHG.  As well, it assured that it is exerting efforts to reduce the company’s GHG emissions.
