US-based Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), the national trade organisation for tyre manufacturers is supporting a senate bill introduced by a Texan delegate, banning the sale of used tyres.
SB 459, introduced by Senator Jose Rodriguez is prohibiting the sale of unsafe used tyres that are readily available and pose a significant risk to motorists.
RMA has testified in a recent hearing on the bill, and expressed that businesses should not be permitted to offer tyres that are worn-out , damaged , or indicating other unsafe conditions.
Dan Zielinski , RMA Senior Vice President said that the legislation, which curbs the practice of selling unsafe used tyres will help improve highway and motorist safety in the state, which, according to him is the “highest priority for the tyre industry”.
Proving their point, RMA bought several used tyres from several outlets in Texas. Each tyre exhibited one or more conditions that are clearly unsafe – worn out, visible damage to the tread or other portions of a tyre and improperly repaired.
According to RMA, tyres worn to 2/32 of an inch are considered bald and are dangerous and such tyres no longer provide sufficient grip on the road, particularly under wet conditions. Damage that expose steel belts or other internal components threaten a tyre’s structural integrity. Moreover, improperly repaired tyres can suffer loss of inflation pressure or have hidden damage that may contribute to tyre failure.
The Association said that it is advocating state laws that promote motorists safety such as the SB 459, adding that they are continually educating policymakers and consumers about the dangers of unsafe used tyres. “Consumers may think used tires are a bargain but saving a few dollars isn’t worth the risk if your choice includes a worn out or damaged tire, ” said Zielinski.
Previously, RMA already published an information bulletin on used tyres. Currently, it is supporting unsafe used tyre laws in Florida, as well as Texas.
