Pakistan customs retrieves smuggled tyres

The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I), Karachi has recovered about 800 smuggled tyres, worth Rs13 million, in a raid on Friday.

A statement issued by the directorate said the raid at a warehouse situated in the city was conducted with the assistance of Pakistan Rangers on specific information.

“During the raid, around 800 smuggled tyres used for trucks and cars were recovered from godown,” the statement said and added that the value of the tyres was calculated about Rs13 million.

A person was arrested during the raid, said the statement. It added that further investigation and inquiry in this regard had been underway and first information report and challan would be submitted to the court of law after completion of the legal proceedings.

When contacted Asif Marghoob Siddiqui, director of Customs I&I, Karachi, said that the raid was conducted under the strategy formulated by the Federal Board of Revenue to stop smuggling and promote local industry.

He also said that Director General Lutfullah Virk had issued special instructions to prevent revenue losses and stop movement of goods where duty and taxes were not paid.

The regional directorate in another raid recovered 300 smuggled tyres amounting three million rupees.

Siddiqui said that such raids would continue in future to eradicate menace of smuggling and in this regard necessary instructions had been issued to the concerned officials.
