Goodyear makes tyres that power electric cars

Driving electric cars is the eco-friendly way to go, but the fear of dying batteries kilometers from a charging station makes it harder to do the right thing.

Goodyear Tire gets that. So they introduced the BH03, a tyre concept that can turn the heat from the tyres to electrical energy to charge the car’s batteries. The company is not giving specific details, but said the tyre has a layer of thermo-piezoelectric material.

The BH03 has textured spots that absorb heat at light. So aside from heat from the friction when you drive, the BH03 also gets juice when you’re parked in a very sunny spot.

“These concept tyres re-imagine the role that tires may play in the future,” said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief technical officer. “We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile.”

The idea is still a concept and Goodyear hasn’t specified when it will be available to the public.
