CooperVision introduces daily disposable silicone hydrogel lens

CooperVision

CooperVision Inc. announced the U.S. launch of MyDay, a new premium silicone hydrogel lens that expands the company’s daily disposable lens portfolio,

CooperVision representatives told Primary Care Optometry News that the new lens provides improved softness, comfort and handling along with the advantages of silicone hydrogel material.

Michelle North, marketing director for CooperVision, said that the lens is 54% water, thereby increasing wettability; has a low modulus, making it soft; and has high oxygen transmissibility. In addition, MyDay provides UV protection. She noted that all of these attributes are contained throughout the material, without the use of coatings or surface treatments.

The lens fits a wide range of corneal curvatures, according to North, and company data shows that 100% of patients were fit with a single base curve.

According to CooperVision, the MyDay daily disposable lens is available in sphere powers from +6 D to -10 D (0.50-D steps after +5 D and -6 D), a base curve of 8.4 mm, a diameter of 14.2 mm, a Dk/t of 100 at -3 D and a modulus of 0.4 MPa.

North said that MyDay will be available to select practices this month and by August it will be available nationwide.

CooperVision’s Steve Diamante told PCON that the use of smart silicone chemistry is “a story of doing more with less.” He explained that continuous silicone channels through the lens to transmit oxygen, and that base curves are less important with softer material.

MyDay was launched in Australia in 2013, North said. According to a study CooperVision conducted between September and November 2013 involving 33 Australian optometrists, after fitting 546 patients, 94% of doctors rated the lens’ performance as excellent, and 82% said they were likely or very likely to consider MyDay as their lens of choice for patients wearing the daily disposable modality.

North told PCON that CooperVision is positioning MyDay as a premium silicone hydrogel for patients wanting the most comfortable contact lens experience. CooperVision’s Clariti 1 Day “is a silicone hydrogel we’re positioning to get existing hydrogel lens wearers into a softer material,” she said.

She explained that MyDay is different from Clariti 1 Day in that “MyDay is more efficient at transmitting oxygen, so we need less silicone. It will be softer. Clariti gives a high level of oxygen without the higher price point.

“Proclear 1 Day is a unique material that remains hydrated throughout the day,” North continued. “It’s very good for dry eye patients. We will retain this product. It’s a premium hydrogel because of its unique claim for dry eye.”

North concluded: “Our message is about upgrading patients into silicone hydrogel. We will present MyDay with Clariti as a family of 1-day lenses.” -http://www.healio.com
