THE INDIAN state of Kerala is going into organic rubber farmer. Experts say that as an alternative to traditional methods using chemical fertilisers, organic farming should be given the boost. However, this method is being practiced sporadically by individuals rather than farmer groups.
The benefits of using organic farming include lesser farming costs (as compared to the traditional) and higher yield according to the method’s proponents.
Amidst the growing trend in organic rubber farming, India still lacks market for organic produce.
Bobby Issac, director of the Indian operations of Germany-based Lacon said that organic rubber-based products fetch good demand in the Europe, but it is still a long way for India to catch up on this organic farming practice.
