The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) is using big data analytics to coordinate essential data from the industries under its purview in order to maximize the country’s resources.
This strategy, according to MPIC Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, will make it easier for ministries and industry participants in this key sector to obtain up-to-date information.
Since data and input collecting is still insufficient, a more thorough approach, such as the deployment of drones to see what’s going on in particular areas may be required, the Minister said on a local broadcast, “Mensejahterakan Sektor Agrikomoditi Negara” , adding that she has prepared consultants who can collect the data.
According to Zuraida, Malaysia has placed the overall area of oil palm plantations at 6.5 million hectares, and big data could provide an updated figure, since some smallholders may have stopped planting oil palm and their data has not been updated.
