A major fire on a tyre factory premises destroyed rubber waste and other materials at the open waste dump yard near Melur on Tuesday.
Firemen from four fire stations fought for nearly nine hours to put out the flames. However, none was injured, the police said.
The fire was first noticed around 3 a.m.
Residents of Perumalpatti, who live close to the factory premises at Vellaripatti, alerted the police and the Fire Station at Melur.
“Though the inferno was put out by 8 a.m., our men continued to cool the area so that the strong wind did not re-ignite the fire,” he said.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Mangaleswaran.
