Thailand to accelerate plan to cut down aging rubber trees

THAILAND, the world`s largest producer and exporter of natural rubber, may cut down 500,000 rai (80,000 hectares) of rubber trees this year to help boost prices, deputy farm minister Nattawut Saikuar said today.

The plan would reduce supply by about 65,000 metric tons this year if implemented, he said. The proposal will be assessed by the nation`s Rubber Estate Organisation tomorrow, and can be implemented immediately without Cabinet approval, Nattawut said.Thailand usually cuts down about 200,000 rai of rubber trees each year, he said.
