Used tyres worth SR6.4 billion ($1.7 billion) were imported into Saudi Arabia in 2012 despite a ministerial decision banning import of such tyres, reports said.
Such tyres are used for small cars, trucks, buses, agro machinery and aircraft, an Arab News report quoting an Al-Eqtesadiah newspaper study said.
Meanwhile, Saudi new tyre imports were worth only SR1.6 billion in the same year, according to the study.
Saudi Arabian Standard Organization (SASO) and the Ministry of Transport had also banned the use of such tyres, the report said.
Japan, China and South Korea topped the countries from which the kingdom imported the used tyres.
