Nokian’s latest tyre features temperature-adaptive studs

Finnish tyre maker Nokian Tyres has launched what it says is the world’s first studded winter tyre that automatically adjusts to changes in temperature. Hakkapeliitta 01, as it is known as, features double action stud technology, with studs that switch between On and Off modes depending on conditions.

Nokian says the technology reduces road wear by up to 30% compared to its predecessor, while improving ice grip by up to 10% and wet grip by up to 5%. The tyre also reduces noise levels by up to one decibel, the company says.

The Hakkapeliitta 01 is built for passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs, and is certified with Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip symbols. The tread compound includes renewable materials such as natural rubber, bio resin and bio-based oils derived from pine resin and canola oil.

The company also adds that the technology realises a concept the company introduced in 2014 for a winter tyre with retractable studs. The company invented the winter tyre in 1934 and introduced the first Hakkapeliitta branded tyre 90 years ago.

Hakkapeliitta 01 will be available in autumn 2026, with the Nordic countries and North America as main markets. Nokian produces the tyre at its factory in Nokia, Finland.
