Top American recycling tyre company Liberty Tyre is turning fuel out of the tires that it produces in the company’s Braddock production facility. For the past six months, the company has converted its facility in western Pennsylvania to produce rubber chips that can be burned with biomass or coal.
As he tyre rubber heats, it burns cleaner and hotter coal, according to Jeff Kendall, CEO of Liberty Tire.
“Converting scrap tires to fuel has actually been around for decades,” he said. “It’s the oldest good use of scrap.”
The company collects 2.8 billion pounds of tyres per year, about 140 million of it were from passenger cars.
The company also creates rubber mulch and crumb rubber which are used for playgrounds and sports fields.
Just this week, Liberty Tire signed a deal with Hertz for a US-wide car rental contract.
The company at present is dealing with Walmart, Bridgestone and Firestone and Sam’s Club. (RJA)
