The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announced that it will release “throwback” race tyres for the NASCAR races at Darlington Raceway, South Carolina on September 5 and 6.

Goodyear will replace their “Goodyear Eagle” logo on tyre sidewalls with the logo they used in the 1970s. The tyres will be part of a broader “throwback” initiative at Darlington designed to honor the track’s storied past in NASCAR racing. In addition, many NASCAR teams and sponsors are participating by running vintage-inspired paint schemes.

The tyres will be used on the NASCAR XFINITY Series VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200, September 5, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500, September 6.

The Darlington Raceway was the site for major milestones in Goodyear’s 61-year history with NASCAR. The company conducted its first official NASCAR tire tests at Darlington in 1954, and would go on to earn its first NASCAR victory at the 1959 Southern 500 with driver Jim Reed.

“Since our earliest days in NASCAR, Goodyear has used the sport as a proving grounds for tyre development and innovation,” said Stu Grant, general manager of global race tyres. “The Darlington Throwback weekend is a great opportunity for us to recognize our rich NASCAR heritage, as we continue to drive superior performance both on and off the track.”
