THE former site of US rubber products manufacturer, Plymouth Rubber will be undergoing a remediation clean up to facilitate the development of housing units.
The cleanup of the 40-acre contaminated plant site has been appraised to cost US$7 million, or US$2 million more than the initial estimate, according to the consultancy report for the 348-unit development proposed for the site.
The report also covered effects on traffic, project feasibility, fiscal effects to the community, and development-related environmental issues.
Meanwhile, Illinois-based Canton Holdings LLC will conduct a clean up of the contaminated site as a part of the development process, which is assumed to take several years.
The site developer said the cleanup cost will include removing of old that contain asbestos, soil remediation, and US$700,000 of work on a diversion channel constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The development plan for the site will consist of 204 rental apartment units in six buildings, 64 townhouse units in 15 buildings, and 80 age-restricted units in two buildings. A former parking lot across the Plymouth Rubber site will be converted into 48 units of assisted living.
The formerly Massachusetts-based Plymouth Rubber had disnantled its polyvinyl chloride manufacturing plant in the state and moved production to other locations including China.
