Nynas’s new process oil to help rolling resistance in tyres

hydrotreating-technologyA new high-performance grade has now been added to Swedish oil company Nynas’s product slate, designed to meet the demands of the market and help the industry tackle challenges such as reducing rolling-resistance, boosting fuel economy, and sourcing reliable supply.

The all-new process oil Nytex 846 provides all of the advantages of pure naphthenic oils, such as high compatibility with polar and non-polar rubber, ease of processing, and excellent low-temperature properties. Furthermore, the product’s low colour allows for its use in the formulation of innovative end products within the full colour range.

“Nytex 846 has been developed to support the continuing challenge the tyre industry faces to meet an ever-growing demand to improve fuel economy without compromising on wet grip or wear,” explains Dr. Herbert Fruhmann, Global Marketing Manager for Tyre and Rubber Oils.

The oil is produced using hydrotreating technology, and its polarity is designed to ensure it performs well in conjunction with a wide range of polymers, including natural rubber (functionalised, solution, and emulsion), SBR, polybutadiene rubber, and halobutyl rubber, as well as EPDM, making it a versatile and reliable product in all application areas.

The new product has a viscosity within the Bright stock range and a high flashpoint for safe processing, which makes it attractive for high-temperature curing operations in EPDM applications. Initial tests have shown good performance and high-compatibility with other components.

“The product’s glass transition temperature (Tg) is -46°C. We believe, and in-house tests have shown, that Nytex 846 can help to reduce the rolling-resistance of tyres, while also improving traction at low-temperatures,” notes Dr. Mika Lahtinen, Global Technical Manager for Tyre and Rubber Applications.

Nytex 846 is designed to meet the present and foreseeable health, safety, and environmental demands of legislative bodies around the globe, including all requirements on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), making it a sustainable and safe choice for the tyre and rubber industry. The product will be made available worldwide through Nynas’ extensive depot network, serving the needs of an active global industry.
