New Hampshire rubber plant named hazardous by EPA

collinsThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added a former rubber plant located at Farmington, New Hampshire to the Superfund list of hazardous waste sites.

The Superfund investigates and cleans up identified hazardous waste sites across the US.

The 123-acre site Collins & Aikman Plant was the location of Davidson Rubber Co Inc. The company made automotive instrument panels and other products from the 1960s through 2001. It also did paint operations in the 1960s and 1970s.

It was sold in 2001 to Collins & Aikman Interiors, Inc, before it closed in 2006.

According to EPA, the site and an underground aquifer are contaminated with toxic chemicals including tetrachloroethylene, or PCE. The ground water plume may threaten nearby wells, public water systems and wetlands, it said.
