Government plans to put up P100-million rubber institute

PHILIPPINES – The Agriculture department plans to spend about P100 million to establish a Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI) in 1,000-hectare area near Mindanao State University in Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay next year, the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) said in a recent statement.

The site will be donated by the provincial government, Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Rommel A. Jalosjos said in the release.

It also quoted BAR Director Nicomedes P. Eleazar as saying that “PRRI should become at par with the rubber institutes in Malaysia, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and China that have been developing new superior rubber varieties” and that the institute will also serve as an industry test and certification centre.
