Continental, Pyrolyx sign five-year agreement for rCB; expects up to 10ktpa supply

Waste tyre pyrolysis company Pyrolyx will be supplying Continental’s numerous tyre manufacturing facilities worldwide with recovered carbon black (rCB) amounting to some 10 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa). Meanwhile, Pyrolyx expects to absorb over 3 million end-of-life tyres and simultaneously reduce annual CO2 emissions by more than 25kt under the five-year deal.

Pyrolyx US CEO Thomas Redd said the agreement was “a positive development for Pyrolyx and validates our approach to the recovery of carbon black from end-of-life tyres and the acceptance of rCB globally.”

In addition, Continental’s VP, Material/Process development, Dr. Andreas Topp, said the agreement “underlines our commitment to improving the sustainability of our products and operations.”

A signed letter of intent for the supply agreement, which was signed earlier this year, states that the rCB would be initially supplied to Continental from Pyrolyx’s existing plants in Stegelitz, Germany and in Indiana, US. The supply deal also requires the development of additional Pyrolyx manufacturing capacity in eastern Europe, which is expected to be operational by late 2021.
