Bridgestone to cut jobs in European plants

Bridgestone says that it will be laying off some 510 workers in two of its European plants after its tyre sales plunged.

The company, which employs about 13,000 people in Europe has recently reported that they are streamlining jobs due to the sluggish tyre sales in its home continent.  The company’s latest  nine-month earnings report shows a 17% decrease in sales to US$3.36 billion.

About 442 employees will lose their jobs in the company’s plants in Spain, where there are currently three plants operating, while 50 workers from the Bethune, France plant will be booted.

Aside from Spain and France, Bridgestone alsO has plants in Poland, Italy and Hungary as well as logistic centres and a research and development test centre. (RJA)
