3M unveils new and better rubber adhesives

Multinational corporation 3M unveils its new proprietary adhesive formula in its Scotch® High Strength Filament Tapes.

The new technology that 3M used is called the Modified Synthetic Rubber (MSR). It offers similar benefits as natural rubber adhesives but at a lower overall production cost.

3M said that the new technology will provide the adhesive industry with a feasible alternative to natural rubber. It will provide up to 50% higher adhesion in two minutes of dwell time. The technology also has the strength that is considered better than the natural rubber adhesives.

“We are excited to bring the new MSR portfolio of filament tape products to market globally. With volatile raw material prices leading to uncertainty in the marketplace and our commitment to reducing solvent emissions, we put 3M ingenuity and innovation to work,” said the global business manager for 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division Chad Henke.

He said that the MSRA formulation was developed to meet the standard performance that critical metal applications need. He added that it is ideal to be used in metal coil closure and bundling of metals such as steel, copper and aluminium.

“In global customer trials and evaluations, we saw no compromise in performance with the MSR Adhesive. In applications involving certain non-ferrous metals there was no ghosting or adhesive residue upon removal, further strengthening our value proposition to our customers when compared to traditional natural rubber filament tapes,” said Henke.
